Mario Kart Wii can be played using the Wii remote, the Wii remote with the Wii wheel, the Wii remote with the Nunchuk, the classic controller or the Nintendo Gamecube Controller. Getting Started
- Insert the Mario Kart Wii Game Disc in the disc slot. The will turn on, and the Warning - Health and Safety screen will appear. Read the contents and press A to continue.
- When the Wii menu appears, point the cursor at the Disc Channel (displaying the Mario Kart Wii) and press A.
- When the Channel Preview screen appears, point the cursor at the Start and press A.
- A screen will appear that shows you how to attach the wrist strap. Just a reminder to put on the strap. Press A to continue.
- Next the title screen will appear. Press A to go to the Select License screen.
Note: Change controllers only at the title screen. If you changed correctly the controller will appear on the menu screen which you will then be able to press the A button to continue.
Controllers can not be changed in the middle of a race.
Select Licenese
When playing for the first time, place the cursor over a new license and press A to confirm. Otherwise select an existing license and press A to continue. Note: You can register up to four licenses.
Create a License
If you choose a new license in the Select License screen, you will go to the Choose a Mii screen. In addition to the six preset Miis, you will be able to choose any of the Miis in the Mii Channel. After you choose a Mii, your license will be ready and you will go to the Main Menu. Note: You can change the registered Mii in License Settings.
Driving Techniques
Tips to help you improve your driving skills! There are two types of vehicles that you can choose from, karts and bikes, and each has its own driving techniques. Note: These instructions are for the use of the Wii Wheel.
Rocket Start
Press and hold 2 at just the right time during the countdown to rev up your engine and give yourself a burst of speed of the starting line.
Drifting
Drifting lets you take sharp corners without slowing down. To drift, press B while holding 2 when turning to slide sideways. Also, while drifting, you can change your direction by turning the wheel. If you select Automatic Drift, you can drift by using just the wheel.
Mini-Turbo
After drifting for a bit, sparks will fly from your tires, Release B when blue flames start shooting out to get a boost of speed, also called a Mini-Turbo. Mini-Turbos are only possible when your drift mode is set to Manuel.
Super Mini-Turbos
Continue to drift after the blue flames appear, and they will turn orange. Release B at this point to activate a bigger boost of seed, also called a Super Mini-Turbo. Super Mini-Turbos are only possible when your drift mode is set to Manual and you are driving a kart.
Tricks
Shake the Wii Wheel up, down, right and left as you leave a platform (in other words a jump) to perform a trick. Remember the shaking must be done in the air. Successful tricks give you a short speed boost when you land. This works for both karts and bikes.

Wheelie
Tilt the Wii Wheel up when riding a bike to preform a wheelie and get a speed boost. Be careful because it's more difficult to turn when doing a wheelie, and if another vehicle hits you during a wheelie, you'll slow down and lose control. To exit the wheelie, simply push your Wii Wheel back down. Remember you can only perform wheelies when driving a bike.
Items
Pick up items in a race to perform various actions. Note: During team battles your items won't affect your teammates.
Getting Items
Pass through item blocks to pick them up. The item you get is randomly determined. (Randomly passed on your position) If you already have an item, you can't pick up anotehr one. However, if you equip an item, you can pick up another item.
Using Items
Press the arrow keys.
Equipping Items
You can equip certain items. When an item is equipped, it acts like a shield. It will help block items thrown at you. Items like Triple Bananas can be equipped by pressing the left arrow key once, while others, like Banana, will only stay equipped for as long as you hold the left arrow key.
Throwing Items
You can throw some items backward or forward. To throw an item forward, press the up arrow key. To throw it behind you, press the down arrow key. Note: When using controllers other than the Wii Wheel, throw items forward by pressing the button to use items while pressing the Control Stick forward.
Important Things To Note About Items
You will most likely drop an item if you flip or spin out. If you drive over a dropped item, you will feel its effects immediately.
Item List
Items that you may pick up include Banana/Triple Bananas, Green Shell/Triple Green Shells, Red Shell/Triple Red Shells, Mushroom/Triple Mushrooms, Spiny Shell, Bomb, Fake Item Box, Bullet Bill, Blooper, Lightning, Star, Mega Mushroom, Lightning Cloud, POW Block, Golden Mushroom.
Game Modes
There are 4 main game options: Single Player, Multiplayer, Nintendo WFC and Mario Kart Channel.
Click here for more information on the Mario Kart Channel. You can play different Game Modes depending on whether you're in a Single Player or Multiplayer section. The Grand Prix and Time Trail modes only allows single player to play. The VS and Battle modes allow both Single Player and Multiplayer players to play.
Grand Prix
There are eight cups, with each cup featuring four different tracks. Race against 11 other opponents on each track for the best overall standings. Playing in this mode will unlock more characters, bikes and karts.
To start a race you must select the following:
- Choose from the classes: 50 cc where only karts race, 100 cc where only bikes race and 150 cc where you can race both bikes and karts. Only you complete these you will have Mirror available.
- Choose your driver: Select the character you want to race with.
- Choose your vehicle: The vehicle available to you depends on the size of your character. So different vehicles will be available to different characters.
- Choose your drift mode: select between automatic or manual. Automatic allows you to drift with no Mini-Turbos and manuel lets you control the drift and allows you to use Mini-Turbos.
- Choose a cup to complete in: there are 8 in total to select from. Those include the Mushroom Cup, the Flower Cup, the Star Cup, the Special Cup, the Shell Cup, the Banana Cup, the Leaf Cup and the Lightning Cup.
Racing Results
Points are earned based on your placement in the race. After you finish all four courses within a cup, your points are added together to determine your overall ranking. The gold trophy is awarded to first place, silver to second place and bronze to third place. In addition, your driving technique will also be ranked. Driving Technique is determine by 3 stars is the best, followed by 2 stars, 1 star, A, B, C, D and E being the worst.
Time Trail
Within the time trails you race on a course to break the best existing time record. You can create a ghost that races on your previous exact path. If you beat your fastest time, your race data will automatically be saved as a ghost.
VS
In VS, as a single player you can race against the CPU players. In Multiplayer mode, you can race from two to four players.. Then you can select to race a solo race or team race. Solo races are has stated, you race alone against others for the most points. In a Team race you are split into two teams that compete for the most points.
VS Rules
Choose Rules and press A to set the engine class, CPU difficulty, vehicle types, course, items and race count.
Battle
You may battle in single mode or in multiplayer mode. Note: battles are played in teams. The first tea to reach teh number set win. You may select 2 types of battles: Balloon Battle or Coin Runners. In Balloon Battle each team tries to pop the other team's balloon. The team with the most points at the end wins. Just pick the course and use items to pop the other team's ballons. In Coin Runners, race around collecting the most coins. The team with the most coins at the end wins.
Nintendo Mario Kart Wii Wi-Fi Connection
- You can choose to play as a 1 player or 2 players on the Nintendo WFC. Two players with one Wii can connect to the Nintendo WFC. Choose which mode you want to play ( 1 or 2 players) and then press A.
- The Nintendo WFC screen will appear and you will start to connect to Nintendo WFC.
- Once you have successful connected, the mode-select screen will appear. Modes include: Worldwide, Regional or Friends. Choose a mode to play and then press A. Note: if you have friends that connect to Nintendo WFC while you are connect, your friends icon will change and the Mii fro your friends will change from pink to yellow color.
- If you choose Worldwide or Regional...
Worldwide - play an opponent from somewhere around the world.
Regional - play an opponent in your region of the world.
Your rating changes depending on the result of your match. Your rating is a number that represents how good of a player you are. It starts at 5000 and goes up or down depending if you win or lose the match.
- Choose a game mode. You can pick between race or battle modes. Note: in VS races and battles your ratings are calculated independently. In VS races, you earn a VS rating and in battles you earn a Battle Rating.
- Choose your character, vehicle and drift mode.
- Finding Opponents. Once the opponents have been found, you will vote on which course to play.
- Vote on a course or stage from 32 available. Every player gets to vote. Battle mode has only 10 stages you can vote from.
- View Results when the race ends. Player's ratings will be displayed and they depend on their placement.
Friends
When you play with friends you can complete in a VS race or battle. You can join a friend who is currently playing online when you're online. Note: You can choose to be in teams or by yourself when racing in a VS race.
Hosting a Race
- To host a race, you must create a room by selecting Create a Room and then press A.
- Wait until your friends join your room. If you wish to shut the room down, then select Back and press A.
- While waiting for a room, you can send messages to your friends. If there are players in the room who are not registered to your friend roaster , the register icon will appear. Select it and press A to ask them to register you as a friend. If the player accepts, you can register each other without exchanging friends code.
- Choose Close and press A to chose teh game mode and rules.
- Choose the character, vehicle and drift mode for your race.
- Confirm the match's participants.
- Vote on the course or stage.
- End the race. Once you have completed 3 races you will return to vote on a course or stage. Once you have completed 4 races, you return to wait to start.
Joining a Friend
- Find a friend. You can join a friend who is already connected to Nintendo WFC. Choose that friend's Mii and presss A to confirm.
- Chhose Meet Up and press A. You can join a friend's room and play or you can join a race that your friend is playing.
- While waiting for a room, you can send messages to your friends. If there are players in the room who are not registered to your friend roaster , the register icon will appear. Select it and press A to ask them to register you as a friend. If the player accepts, you can register each other without exchanging friends code.
- Wait to Start. Send a message to your friends while you wait fro the game mode and rules.
- Choose the character, vehicle and drift mode for your race.
- Confirm the match's participants.
- Vote on the course or stage.
- End the race. Once you have completed 3 races you will return to vote on a course or stage. Once you have completed 4 races, you return to wait to start.
Find a Friend
If you and another player register each other's friend codes, you become Mario Kart Wii friends and are able to player together via Nintendo WFC. You friend roster will display your friends' Miis. You can check to see a friend's connection status or check their registration information. You can also delete them from the friend roster. Note: Players can register up to 30 friends per license.
How to Register a Friend in Mario Kart Wii
- Exchange friend codes with another player.
- IF you choose to register a friend, a screen will appear where you will enter a friend code. After entering it, chose OK and press A.
- In order to register each other's friend code to your friend rosters, you must both connect to Nintendo WFC. If both players connect to Nintendo WFC at the same time, they will be registered to one another's friend rosters. **Important to NOTE: If player one connect and disconnects and then player two connects at a later time, only player one will have registered onto player's two friend roster. For player two to be connected, player one must connect a second time after player two has connected.
Problems registering friend codes
Unregistered Friend Codes - If there is a question mark in a blacken box being displayed, the friend code entered may be incorrect. To fix this problem, delete the friend code entry in question and enter it again.
Your Friend's Mii and Nickname - Friends who aren't completely registered will appear only as friend codes. Once registration is complete, their Miis and nicknames will appear.
Other things to Note
- The Mario Kart Wii game disc will check to see if your console has the latest system menu, if not it will update your system.
- You can register a player without exchanging friend codes, if they accept.
- You can register up to 30 friends for each license.
About Save Data
Mario Kart Wii saves automatically, and you need 23 blocks of empty space in your Wii system memory. When you end a race, your progress to the point will automatically be saved to your license.
Note: Do not turn the power off or press RESET while saving.
Note: The save data cannot be copied to an SD card.
