Rhythm Heaven is a new game by Nintendo for the DS and DSi handheld
consoles. It is a rhythm game like "Dance Dance Revolution" or "Elite
Beat Agents" combined with mini games that you see in games like
"WarioWare: Touched". One quirky item about this game is that you
play with the DS on its side instead of the usual clamshell
orientation, using just the stylus - no button mashing on this game!
The game starts with a short learning curve, walking you through a
flicking how-to tutorial; this intelligently teaches you how hard a
flick the game is expecting you to do to make the game work; if you
have trouble with it, just flick it as if you were quickly drawing a
checkmark. You have to energetically snap your wrist quickly to get
it.

As mentioned before, you start off with one mini rhythm game, and if
you manage to complete at a certain level of skill, additional levels
open up. Each level walks the player through a practice session to
get an understanding of what is expected in the mini game. When
you're comfortable enough, you can then play the level itself.
The mini games are fun - the first one, called "Built to Scale" (pun
on scale for music and scale models) is a assembly line where two
square pieces roll to the beat; when they line up, you flick the peg
into them to make the assembled part. If your timing is off, the
parts get knocked off or fall off the assembly line.
The next game has you following two other singers in the "Glee Club".
Touching the screen shuts your mouth, pulling the stylus off the
screen opens your mouth for a sustained note. If you miss the note,
the other singers give you a funny disapproving look until the next
time you hit the note.
My favorite mini game so far is "Fan Club" where a you lead an
audience of monkeys to cheer on a super cute pop star singer - yes
that sounds weird when you read it but its very cute when you play the
game.
The game also has remix levels where it combines multiple games in a
mashup, quickly switching from one game to the next. At the end of
the song/level you get a review of your performance, usually with some
funny quip about the performance. You accumulate "Flow" and "Medals"
for your performances. These open up additional levels and games.
Medals are used to open up options in the "Medal Corner" where you
have endless games, rhythm toys and guitar lessons.
There is also a "Cafe" where you can read hints, talk with the
Barista, practice flicking and listen to songs from the game as you
open them up.
This game is very fun, and suitable for both girls and boys.
"Practice makes perfect! Just let the rhythm be your guide!"
