Making sure you update your Wii's software system allows you to have the latest options available. Nintendo release updates to the existing Wii Menu, enhancements to other system features and channels. Sometimes the updates are important upgrades to the Wii system.
In previous versions, there have been very important Wii System Menu and Feature Updates. Some have been addition of new channels, such has the Wii Speak Channel, Everyone Votes Channel. Others have been enhancements to current channels or updated the menu systems. One of the latest big upgrade enhancement was the Wii Menu 4.0 which provided enhanced storage options. But make sure to read before you agree to the upgrade, there might be an upgrade you might want to skip. For example, many Wii owners choose to skip the upgrade which replaced MP3 music file support with AAC compatibility. Another example would be the last update if you did not purchased your Wii in the US, the update will break your Wii. So it's important to know what changes each upgrade does to your Wii system.
Note: If you brought your Wii outside the US, do not upgrade! Nintendo is blocking "Unauthorized Modifications" to your Wii. (Update Sept. 28, 2009, Wii Menu 4.2)
Past Updates
- Sept. 28, 2009 - Wii Menu 4.2 will automatically remove such unauthorized channels or firmware may impair game play or the Wii console.
- Sept. 14, 2009 - The Nintendo Channel was updated with several new features: view users' recommendations in the "Everyone's Recommendations" feature, make recommendations for your favorite Nintendo DS games, bookmark your favorite games, choose to watch videos in "High" or "Normal" quality.
